BECOME THE LEGEND OF YOUR RIDES
For many recreational cyclists, the challenge is not just about cycling further or longer. It's about getting the most out of a ride that makes cycling fun. Riding that climb a little harder, riding a technical forest path faster, or finally setting a personal record on your favourite segment. Platforms like Strava make it extra motivating with achievements like KOM, QOM, CR, and Local Legend. But ultimately, it's not just about a digital title. It's about riding smarter, getting stronger, and pushing yourself more on the bike. With the right preparation, you increase your chances of a fast time, whether on a road bike, mountain bike, or gravel bike.
What do KOM, QOM, CR, and Local Legend mean?
Local Legend
You earn the Local Legend title by riding a segment most often within ninety days. Speed doesn't matter here. This often makes it the most achievable title for recreational cyclists.
KOM, QOM, and CR
KOM stands for King of the Mountain and QOM for Queen of the Mountain. These are the fastest times on a segment. It doesn't have to be a mountain anymore: flat roads, gravel sections, and technical trails can also have a KOM or QOM. There's also the CR: the Course Record. That's the fastest time ever ridden on a segment.
PRs: the most achievable challenge
While KOMs and CRs are often set by avid riders or perfect conditions, personal records are achievable for everyone. A PR is all about your own progress. Whether you ride a familiar loop faster, climb better, or cross a gravel section more efficiently: every improved result is a win. This makes it an accessible way to keep challenging yourself, without having to compete with others.
How to increase your chances of a fast time
Riding a fast time is about more than just pedalling hard. Preparation often makes the difference.
- Know the segment
First, explore the section at a leisurely pace. Pay attention to bends, the road surface, and where you can best accelerate. - Choose the right conditions
Tailwind, dry surface, and fresh legs can make a huge difference. - Make sure you are rested
Tired legs or a bad night's sleep will be immediately noticeable during intense exertion. - Minimise resistance
Tight cycling clothing, well-inflated tires, and a clean drivetrain help more than you think. At CUBE Stores, you'll not only find fast road bikes but also the right gear to get the most out of your rides.

Smart training for more speed
You don't have to be a top athlete to get faster. With a few targeted training sessions, you can make significant gains. Many segments require a short, explosive effort, so it helps to regularly train sprints or short intense blocks of twenty to sixty seconds. In addition, technique plays a big role. Shifting gears well, riding efficiently through bends, and choosing the right pace often make you faster than just extra power. Don't forget your basic fitness either. The better your endurance, the more energy you'll have left for a strenuous effort during your ride.
Ride smart together
Are you cycling with friends or a cycling buddy? Use that smartly. By riding out of the wind, you save energy for when it counts. This can be a big advantage, especially on flat segments.
Nutrition: don't underestimate it
Eating and drinking well directly impacts your performance on the bike.
- Eat enough carbs beforehand, such as oatmeal, bread, or pasta.
- Drink regularly, even if you're not thirsty yet.
- Take something with you to replenish energy, such as a banana or energy bar.
- Avoid bonking, as your strength and speed will quickly disappear then.
Most importantly: keep enjoying it
Achieving a KOM, QOM, or personal record is fun and motivating. But ultimately, cycling isn't just about fast times. It's about enjoyment, challenge, and relishing every ride. Whether you're chasing your first Local Legend or secretly dreaming of a KOM: speed starts with the right bike and setup. In our CUBE Store, we're happy to help you find a road bike and accessories that match your goals on the road.
