Important features of rainwear
When choosing rainwear, there are three key factors: waterproofness, breathability, and fit.
Water resistance
Waterproofness is indicated in millimeters of water column. The higher the number, the better the protection. For everyday use, 5,000 to 10,000 mm is sufficient. If you're on the road for hours or brave heavy showers, 15,000 mm or more is a smart choice.
Breathability
A good raincoat keeps rain out and wicks away moisture. This prevents you from getting clammy from the inside. Materials with a membrane, like Gore-Tex, are ideal for this. Extra ventilation openings, for example, under the arms, make a big difference during intense exertion.
Fit
Comfort is just as important. Make sure you have plenty of freedom of movement and that the jacket offers room for layers without being too loose. Ensure the sleeves and legs fit snugly to prevent rain from seeping in while cycling.
