HOW DO YOU REPLACE A MISSING LINK?
A broken or loose chain while riding is always annoying, but luckily, the problem is often solved faster than you think. With a missing link, you can easily install and remove a bike chain without any special tools. This article explains how to replace a missing link, so you can quickly get back on your bike, both at home and on the road.
What is a Missing Link anyway?
A Missing Link is a connecting link that connects the two ends of your bicycle chain . Shimano, KMC, and other brands use this system because it makes chain maintenance and replacement much easier. Instead of pushing out pins with a chain tool, you simply click the chain loose and back on. Ideal for maintenance, cleaning your drivetrain, or replacing a worn chain.
Step 1: Remove the old Missing Link
Want to replace or clean a worn chain? First, you'll need to remove the old missing link.
- Turn the pedals so that the Missing Link is at the top and clearly visible.
- Push the chain slightly towards each other to release any tension.
- If necessary, use Missing Link pliers to unclip the links, especially useful if the chain is a bit dirty or has not been taken off for a long time.
Tip: Don't have pliers handy? With a little practice, you can also carefully loosen the links by moving the chain, but never use brute force, as this can damage the links.
Step 2: Placing the new Missing Link
Insert the new missing link into the open ends of the chain. Make sure both pins fit into the correct slots, then gently pull the chain until the links click into place.
A quick pedal stroke or a gentle tug on the wheel will cause the Missing Link to lock itself. You'll usually hear a distinct clicking sound, which indicates the chain is securely engaged. Finally, check that the link turns smoothly and isn't binding.
Step 3: Always prepared on the road
A Missing Link is small, lightweight, and easily fits in your saddlebag or multi-tool kit. Always carry one (or two) as a spare, along with a multi-tool with a chain tool. This way, if your chain breaks, you can act quickly on the road and be back on your bike in minutes.
