WASHING CYCLING CLOTHING: HOW TO KEEP YOUR OUTFIT NICE AND FRESH FOR LONGER

Good cycling clothing is an investment in comfort, performance and durability. But to keep your clothing in top condition, the right washing routine is essential. By washing cycling clothing the right way, you prevent wear and tear, unpleasant odours and loss of functionality such as breathability or water-repellent coatings. In this blog, you will discover how to wash cycling clothing – from sorting to drying – and get handy tips for preserving your favourite items.

Why special attention to cycling clothing?

Cycling jerseys, cycling shorts, base layers and jackets are often made of technical materials that wick away sweat, dry quickly and are close-fitting for optimal aerodynamics. These fabrics require a different treatment than your standard laundry.

Incorrect washing can lead to:

  • Loss of elasticity
  • Damage to seams or silicone grippers
  • Less breathability
  • Rapid development of odors

Fortunately, it's not difficult if you know what to look for.

Step by step: Washing cycling clothing

  1. Read the washing label
You can often wash cycling clothing in the washing machine. Always start by checking the label on the inside, look at the washing instructions. This states exactly what the maximum temperature is and whether the garment is suitable for the washing machine or may only be washed by hand.
  2. Pretreatment: don't give sweat a chance
A washing tip for cycling clothing if there is a lot of sweat or mud from an MTB ride on your clothing. Rinse your cycling clothing with cold water immediately after wearing it. This prevents bacteria from getting stuck in the material. For stubborn odors you can use a little natural vinegar when pre-soaking.
  3. Inside out in the washing machine
Turn garments inside out and close all zippers. This prevents friction and protects the outside of the fabric. Use a laundry bag for extra protection, especially with fine mesh fabrics or padded cycling shorts with chamois.
  4. Use a sports detergent
Avoid aggressive detergents or fabric softener. Choose a mild liquid (sports) detergent that is specially designed for functional fabrics. Fabric softener clogs the fibers and reduces the breathability of your clothing.
  5. Cold wash - 30 degrees is enough
Wash cycling clothing at a maximum of 30°C, preferably with a short, delicate wash program. Sometimes washing machines also have a hand wash program, which is even more gentle. Hot washing can damage elastic fibers or cause shrinkage
  6. Do not tumble dry
Let your clothes air dry, out of the sun and away from direct heat sources. The dryer accelerates wear and can damage technical coatings. A drying rack in a well-ventilated area is the best option.
  7. Washing frequency: after every ride or not?
Cycling clothing that is worn directly on the skin (such as chamois or baselayer) should be washed after each ride. Jerseys or jackets can sometimes be used for a second round, provided they are well ventilated and not too sweaty.

Extra tips for long life of cycling clothing

  • Wash cycling clothing separately from towels, jeans or clothing with Velcro.
  • Never leave wet clothes in a sports bag for a long time.
  • Do not use bleach or vinegar directly in the washing machine – this can damage the fibres.

Take care of your cycling clothes and your clothes will take care of you

Washing cycling clothing is not rocket science, but it does require attention.
