What does the stem of a bicycle do?
The stem of a bicycle connects the handlebars to the head tube. This means that the handlebars are not directly in line with the front fork, but the distance between the saddle and the handlebars is extended.

What to look for when buying a stem?
When buying a stem, there are three important things to consider. First of all, the length of the stem is essential, as it increases the distance between your saddle and handlebars. Secondly, the angle of the stem is important; this determines whether you can sit higher or lower and depends on your flexibility. Finally, the stem must of course fit. Therefore, pay close attention to the clamp diameter of the stem. This must fit your head tube, and your handlebars must be able to be clamped into the stem. Finding the right size is therefore essential.
How to choose the right stem length?
A useful guideline for selecting the optimal stem length for a road bike is to sit on the bike with your hands on the shifters and look down at the front hub. If the stem length is correct, the handlebars should completely obscure the front hub. If you can see the hub in front of the handlebars, the stem is too short. If the front hub extends far out in front of the stem or your arms are too far outstretched, consider a shorter stem. For mountain bike stems, consider a shorter stem if you want to be able to turn more aggressively, while a longer stem will provide more stability.
What types of stems are there?
There are different types of stems , including normal stems and ahead stems.
Normal stem
A normal stem riser makes it easy to raise your handlebars. This type of stem is the most common because it is compatible with almost all normal and electric bicycles. A stem riser uses rings with different thicknesses, with which you can adjust the height precisely.
A-head stem
This type of stem is mainly used on mountain bikes (MTB) and racing bikes, but can also be used on electric bikes or ATB bikes. An ahead aluminum stem is adjustable, allowing you to easily adjust your position on the bike. You can set the stem to a specific angle, for example to move the handlebars or racing handlebars forward for a more sporty cycling position. Ahead stems are available in different lengths, with 90mm and 110mm being the most common lengths.
